A pronounced campfire or pine-smoke flavor is more closely associated with traditional smoked Lapsang Souchong. Sharing a regional tea tradition does not mean both teas must be smoked.

Related history, different processing choices

Jin Jun Mei developed from Tongmu's black tea craftsmanship, but smoke exposure is a separate processing decision. It is inaccurate to say that every Jin Jun Mei must undergo the same “three smoking stages” as a traditional smoked tea.

Smoke, roast and fruit are not the same thing

A toasty or roasted note may remind one drinker of heat without the tea being deliberately smoked. Dried-fruit and longan comparisons are also not the same as wood smoke. Taste at a moderate strength and describe exactly what you notice before deciding what caused it.

If your Jin Jun Mei tastes smoky

First read the packet and the seller's description. Does it explicitly say smoked, unsmoked, roasted or blended? Ask the producer about the batch. Also check whether the tea has been stored beside a heavily smoked tea or strong household odors.

A smoky impression alone cannot prove adulteration or a false origin claim. If a tea sold as unsmoked has a strong unexpected smoky or burnt character, keep the packaging and contact the seller with that specific observation. A suspicious stale or musty smell should not be explained away as a traditional flavor.

Choosing a style you enjoy

For floral and honey-like character, look for a clear unsmoked description and try a small Jin Jun Mei sample. For a deliberate wood-smoke profile, explore smoked Lapsang Souchong instead. Stronger smoke is not a measure of higher quality.

The photographs illustrate brewing and appearance.
