Keemun Tea Caffeine: Who Should Limit Their Intake?

Updated octubre 25, 2026

Keemun tea and dry leaves; caffeine varies with the tea and the way it is brewed.

Keemun is a caffeinated black tea. There is no reliable single caffeine number for every Keemun cup. The tea, leaf weight, water volume and brewing time all matter. Treat an estimate for “black tea” as a general reference, not a laboratory result for the packet you own.

For an adult who enjoys the flavor and tolerates caffeine, a modest serving may fit an ordinary drinking routine. The more useful question is how it fits with the rest of your day, including coffee, other tea, chocolate and any medicines containing caffeine.

How much caffeine is in a cup?

The FDA’s general beverage table lists about 71 mg for 12 US fl oz, approximately 355 ml, of black tea. That is not a Keemun-specific measurement. A small gaiwan pour and a large mug should not be counted as identical cups.

FDA guidance cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults, while emphasizing individual sensitivity. It is not a target to reach or a personal limit for everyone.

Pregnancy changes the calculation

The NHS pregnancy guide advises no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day from all sources. Its cup-of-tea estimate uses a different serving convention from the FDA table. Do not mix the two into a precise count of allowable Keemun cups; discuss your own intake with your maternity clinician.

Leave space around prescribed iron

If you take ferrous sulfate, NHS medicine guidance advises a two-hour gap before tea or coffee because they can reduce iron absorption. Follow the instructions for your actual medicine and ask a pharmacist about timing. That specific advice is more useful than a blanket rule that every person must avoid tea during menstruation.

Let your sleep and symptoms guide the routine

If tea leaves you restless, affects your sleep or upsets your stomach, reduce the amount or choose a different drinking time. FDA guidance includes sleep disturbance and palpitations among signs of excessive caffeine. Seek clinical advice about persistent symptoms or a condition that affects your caffeine tolerance.

A weaker brew may suit your taste, but it is not a measurement of how much caffeine remains. If a precise restriction matters, ask for tested product information or choose an appropriate alternative with professional guidance. Adult reference amounts should not be applied as children’s drinking advice.

What about the claimed health benefits?

Enjoy Keemun as a drink rather than a treatment. Lists of compounds in tea do not establish that a cup will treat liver disease, lower cholesterol, cause weight loss or replace prescribed care. Sweet aroma also does not mean that the tea is a vitamin supplement.

For a comfortable cup, begin with a measured brewing recipe and keep the portion size clear. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or take medication, your clinician or pharmacist can help set an individual limit.
