An imperial story helps people remember a name; the quality of a particular batch still depends on the leaves, processing and care it receives.

Known in English as West Lake Dragonwell, this green tea is associated with Hangzhou in Zhejiang, China. Here is how its history, craft and flavor fit together—and what that fame cannot tell you about a bag of tea.

A tea woven into Hangzhou’s history

The China Agricultural Museum’s account of the West Lake Longjing tea culture system connects local tea growing with temples, villages and the Qianlong Emperor’s visits. Tea, the surrounding landscape and the stories told about them became closely linked.

That cultural setting helps explain why Longjing is more than an anonymous green tea on a shelf. Place names such as Longjing Village and Shifeng carry associations that a product number cannot. They give the tea a story, although a familiar place name on a package still needs supporting origin information.

Where do the imperial legends fit?

Stories about Qianlong carrying leaves in his clothing and the “eighteen imperial tea trees” belong to the tea’s popular cultural narrative. Treat the colorful details as folklore, rather than an explanation of how flat leaves are made or evidence of medical effects. The tea’s shape comes from processing, not pressure from an emperor’s robe.

Pan-firing gives the craft a visible identity

The national intangible cultural heritage entry for West Lake Longjing green-tea making records its inclusion in 2008 and describes a tradition spanning cultivation, picking and skilled pan work. The familiar flat leaf is part of that identity.

Skilled hands adjust their movements as the leaves change during processing. That is worth appreciating without turning “handmade” into a guarantee. The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Tea Research Institute also documents automated Longjing processing designed to improve consistency and quality. Compare the finished batch; do not assume every machine-made tea is inferior.

Does the aroma come from the plant or the pan?

It is a combination, rather than a choice between the two. Leaf material and processing work together. A 2022 study of Longjing-style processing using the Baiye 1 cultivar found that changing processing conditions affected quality, particularly color and aroma. That result concerns the studied material; it is not a formula for every West Lake batch.

Fresh, gently toasted, chestnut-like or floral descriptions can help you discuss a cup. They are not exclusive geographical fingerprints. Picking one bud and one leaf from another tea plant and flattening them does not, by itself, establish West Lake Longjing origin or recreate an identical flavor.

Leaves opening in a clear glass: a useful way to observe tea, not a test of geographical origin.

A living tradition, rather than a quality medal

In 2022, UNESCO inscribed China’s traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices. The wider element includes the knowledge and customs around growing, making, drinking and sharing tea. This cultural recognition is different from certification of a retail product.

A heritage story can make a tea more interesting. It does not certify the origin of an individual package, assign its grade or promise that you will prefer its flavor.

How to explore the tea beyond its reputation

Start with a modest quantity and a clearly described origin. Separate the questions “Where is it from?”, “How was this batch made?” and “Do I enjoy it?” A famous name answers none of those completely on its own.

Try a clear glass or a porcelain vessel, and adjust the brew to the leaves you have. You need not follow a rule that glass is the only acceptable choice.
