They usually refer to a traditional Chinese medicine concept, not a direct measurement of excess water in the body. A small human intervention study offers something more useful than a slogan: a research question, a defined group of participants and results that need to be read within that design.

What does “phlegm-dampness constitution” mean here?

The study used a traditional constitution assessment. Its scores reflect that assessment framework and associated symptoms; they are not interchangeable with a diagnosis of fluid retention, an infection or a metabolic disease. That distinction matters when a marketing headline turns a change in a questionnaire score into a general claim that a tea clears harmful substances from everyone’s body.

How the intervention was organized

The 2021 paper reported 70 participants assessed as having phlegm-dampness constitution: 24 in a new-tea group, 19 in a five-year-tea group and 27 in a lifestyle-control group. A further 42 participants with a balanced constitution provided a comparison. The intervention lasted 90 days, with lifestyle guidance forming part of the study. Its brewing and drinking schedule was a research protocol, not a general prescription for consumers.

What changed, and what did not follow from it?

The authors reported improvements in constitution scores in the tea groups and explored changes in gut microbial composition. These observations are interesting, but a small, specific participant group is not the entire population. A questionnaire improvement does not prove that tea treats a named disease, and a shift in the relative abundance of gut organisms does not by itself establish a clinical benefit.

Can we conclude that younger tea is the better treatment?

The source discussion highlights different patterns between new and aged tea. Those patterns should not be converted into a universal ranking: groups were small, starting measurements differed and the study was short. Stronger evidence would require larger, well-controlled and independently replicated trials with meaningful clinical outcomes. It also matters how the tea itself was selected and standardized.

A practical way to read the claim

Choose a sound tea and a strength you find comfortable, taking caffeine into account. Enjoying Liubao does not require adopting a constitution label or drinking the study’s dose. Persistent swelling or other unexplained symptoms call for appropriate assessment rather than stronger tea. The useful conclusion is that a human study exists and deserves careful reading, not that “dampness removal” has become a proven all-purpose treatment.

Sources and further reading

Research on Liupao tea and phlegm-dampness constitution, 2021

Related guides

How to Brew Liubao Tea: New Leaves and Aged Tea

Wei Jiequn and Liubao Tea: Craft, Storage and Quality

Sheqian Liubao Tea: An Early-Spring Harvest Explained

Explore Tea Knowledge

</trp-tag>

Read a human study of Liubao tea and phlegm-dampness constitution, including its design, findings and limits, before interpreting health claims.

[66,47
67
post-901248","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-dark-tea","category-tea-knowledge","tag-liubao-tea
["GET
