Only tea meeting the requirements for the designated Xihu area should be described as West Lake Longjing.

That makes ‘ordinary Longjing’ a rather loose expression. It may mean perfectly legitimate tea from another Longjing area, a less expensive grade, or simply a seller’s way of contrasting two products. Read a producer’s precise location against the designated area; a city name is useful context, rather than a complete boundary description.

Can tea from outside Hangzhou still be Longjing?

Yes. Tea from the designated Yuezhou area can be legitimate Longjing when it meets the relevant requirements. “Outside Hangzhou” is not, by itself, a reason to relabel every such tea as generic flat green tea. Equally, Yuezhou does not mean all of Zhejiang outside Hangzhou.

Can the price tell you which area it comes from?

No fixed retail price establishes origin. Harvest, grade, quantity, packaging and the selling channel can all affect a quotation. Ask for the actual origin and producer information, then compare like-for-like products. This is a more useful starting point than treating the two area names as fixed quality scores.

Which should you choose?

If West Lake provenance is part of what you want, compare Xihu teas with verifiable origin information. For everyday drinking, consider accurately described teas from either area and try a small quantity first. Compare harvest information, net tea weight and storage as well as the delivered price. There is no dependable rule that one area must always cost twice as much as the other.

Can leaf color or a red bud base prove the origin?

Do not use either as a stand-alone proof of West Lake origin. Appearance can help you describe a sample, but it does not document the garden it came from. Check the actual producer, stated origin and available traceability information. Use the same leaf weight, water and brewing time when comparing cups; the purpose is to find your preference, rather than to certify a geographical origin by taste.

For a quotation you are considering, see our Longjing price guide. For a West Lake origin claim, use the authenticity checklist.

What does West Lake origin tell you?

It tells you where the tea is supposed to come from. It does not tell you everything about the cup. Picking standard, cultivar, weather, pan-firing, storage and brewing all contribute to the result.

West Lake Dragonwell green tea often attracts a premium because of its specific origin and reputation. That premium is worth considering when provenance matters to you, but it is not a promise that every West Lake batch will suit you better than every Qiantang or Yuezhou batch.

Packaging illustration from the supplied material; it does not verify origin or identify a current Sandao product. For a practical verification process, see our three checks for authentic West Lake Longjing.

Are the tea plants different?

Origin and cultivar answer different questions. Longjing 43, the local seed-grown population known as Quntizhong, and Longjing Changye are names you may encounter. A cultivar can be grown beyond one production area, so ‘Longjing 43’ alone does not mean West Lake Longjing.

Quntizhong is a population of genetically varied seed-grown plants, rather than one identical clone. Longjing 43 is a selected clonal cultivar. Neither name guarantees a better batch, and Shifeng should not be assumed to mean that every tea there is Quntizhong.

Packaging illustration from the supplied material; it does not verify origin or identify a current Sandao product. They do not establish the origin of a different bag of tea. Compare the actual producer and traceability information on the tea you receive.

Can you taste the difference?

You may notice differences in aroma, body and finish between particular samples. Chestnut, fresh bean, floral and gentle toasted notes can all appear in Longjing. None is an exclusive fingerprint of West Lake origin.

Try comparing two small samples with the same leaf weight, water, temperature and time. First decide which cup you enjoy; then assess whether the documented origin and price make sense for your purpose. A blind tasting is useful for preference, not a substitute for provenance records.

Qiantang and Yuezhou: compare the tea, not the stereotype

Tea from these areas can be a sensible everyday choice when sold with an accurate origin description. The problem is mislabelling another origin as West Lake, rather than the mere fact that the leaves came from a different Longjing area.

Packaging illustration from the supplied material; it does not verify origin or identify a current Sandao product.
