It helps organise a catalogue, but it does not tell you everything about a particular vessel. Capacity, clay information, workmanship and handling still need to be checked separately.

Use the photographs as a starting point. In the contemporary Sandao example shown here, the body is rounded, with a distinct lid, a projecting spout and a loop handle. The following checklist is an assessment of practical features, not a historical definition of every Fanggu variation.

A contemporary Fanggu-form teapot shown in Sandao’s supplied product photography.

Begin with the body and opening

Look at the relationship between the body width and the opening. Can you load and remove the leaves comfortably? Ask for an interior view rather than relying on a front photograph. Wet leaves can be more difficult to remove than dry leaves are to add.

Confirm the dimensions and normal brewing capacity. A shape that looks compact on screen may be much larger in the hand. Ask whether the capacity is measured to the rim or to the intended fill level.

Check the lid without chasing a perfect seal

Request photographs of the lid seated and removed. Inspect the rim for damage and ask how the lid behaves during a normal pour. A demonstration of a seller’s handling is useful, but it cannot replace inspection of the piece you receive.

Do not use a dramatic water-stop trick or a tight-fitting lid as the only test of quality. A teapot is used as a whole vessel; comfortable handling and a controlled stream matter alongside fit.

Watch the handle and spout together

Ask for a short video that begins with a filled pot and ends after it drains. Watch the grip, the angle needed to pour and any dripping at the finish. A video also helps you understand whether the seller must hold the lid in place.

A close view helps distinguish surface decoration from the overall shape.

Separate form, material and decoration

A listing may combine a shape name, a clay label and a description of calligraphy or engraving. Read those as different pieces of information. None independently proves the maker, age or manufacturing method.

The Met’s historical Yixing collection shows that teapot forms can be varied and expressive. It provides cultural context for looking closely at shape, rather than a certificate for modern pieces with similar visual features.

See the Fanggu Jiangponi teapot for the current product description, and compare it with Sandao’s material and form guide.
