Where Is Lapsang Souchong From? Tongmu and Origin Checks
Tongmu, in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian, China, is the historic reference point for Zhengshan Xiaozhong. When buying tea, however, “made by a Wuyi company” and “grown in Tongmu” are different claims. Ask about the leaves as well as the factory.

Place names need a clear explanation
Tongmu Village and Tongmu Pass are related place names, not a license to apply every surrounding mountain name to every product. Small-area claims need a producer's explanation and traceable batch information. Avoid relying on copied boundary measurements from an unsourced article.

What does “Waishan Xiaozhong” mean?
Waishan means an outside mountain area in this tea context. Sellers may use it for small-leaf black tea made outside the claimed original area. The term alone does not describe every detail of quality or establish one universal boundary. Read the actual origin statement rather than filling in missing information yourself.
Tea grown outside Tongmu can still make an enjoyable cup. The problem is an unsupported origin premium, not the existence of good tea elsewhere.

Can appearance separate the two?
Not reliably. Leaf size, bulk, smoke persistence and the color of the infusion vary with picking, processing and brewing. Two photographs cannot authenticate an origin. A strong smoke note is particularly easy to confuse with a geographic guarantee.

Four questions before buying
Ask where the fresh leaves were harvested; who processed and packed the tea; whether it is smoked or unsmoked; and what lot information supports the seller's claim. Check that the invoice, label and product description agree. A brand's office address is not a tea-garden address.

Try a small sample before paying a substantial premium. Taste is useful for deciding what you enjoy, while records and sourcing transparency answer the separate origin question.
For context, China's national park association publication describes Tongmu's connection with the tea's birthplace. It does not certify the origin of any retail packet.
