Underglaze Blue and Overglaze Enamels What Is the Difference
“Underglaze” and “overglaze” tell you where decoration sits in relation to the glaze. They do not describe the shape of a vessel, its place of manufacture or whether it is an antique. Understanding those two words makes a Chinese porcelain listing easier to read without relying on colour alone.
Where underglaze blue sits
In the familiar blue-and-white tradition, cobalt-blue decoration is applied beneath a transparent glaze. The V&A uses this relationship to explain blue-and-white ceramics. The clear surface covers the design, so the painted appearance should be considered together with the glaze above it.
A blue design is not conclusive evidence of a particular production method. Modern decorative processes vary. If you are buying a piece advertised as hand-painted underglaze blue, ask for a precise description and close photographs of the actual work.
Where overglaze enamels sit
Overglaze enamels decorate an already glazed surface and are fixed through an additional firing. An object can combine underglaze blue with overglaze colours. The Met’s lotus-pond dish, for example, is catalogued with both underglaze cobalt and overglaze polychrome enamels.
That combination helps explain why terms such as doucai refer to more than a colourful palette. Several techniques can produce multicoloured porcelain, and they should not all be given the same name.
Read the description in separate parts
Ask four questions: What is the ceramic body? Where was it made? How was the decoration applied? What is the item’s date or declared age? “Jingdezhen porcelain with contemporary hand-painted overglaze enamels” answers those questions more clearly than “rare Chinese colourful ceramic.”
For functional teaware, also ask whether the decoration appears inside the vessel, near the rim or only on the outside. That information does not establish safety by itself, but it helps identify the exact finish when requesting the maker’s care and intended-use documentation.
Avoid a simple quality ranking
Underglaze is not a universal synonym for high quality, and overglaze is not a synonym for poor durability. Judge the actual product, the workmanship and the maker’s instructions. Decorative complexity, consistency and condition can all matter, but they are different questions from the location of the pigments.
Use technique information in an inquiry
Send the seller the listing and ask whether it uses underglaze decoration, overglaze enamels or both. Request forming and painting details separately. If the piece has metallic accents, ask about heating restrictions. For routine care, follow the instructions for the exact finish. A historical example in a museum can clarify terminology without proving that a newly advertised object has the same materials, age or production history.
