Spring vs Autumn Lapsang Souchong: What Actually Matters
A spring label is useful information, but it cannot tell you the whole quality story. For Lapsang Souchong, ask whether the comparison involves the same origin, picking standard and processing style before deciding that one season must taste better.

Start by checking what the harvest claim means
Spring is an important harvest season in the Tongmu tea tradition. An “autumn Lapsang” listing needs a specific origin and harvest explanation; a generic account of autumn black tea elsewhere does not establish what a Tongmu producer harvests or sells.
Keep harvest season separate from the packing date. A tea packed in October was not necessarily picked in autumn. Ask for the year, picking period and batch details, especially when a seasonal claim explains a large price difference.
Why two batches can taste different
Leaf development, weather, handling, oxidation, drying and storage all affect the cup. Seasonal comparisons only make sense after those variables are considered. A well-kept older batch can also differ from one exposed to heat or damp.

Avoid rigid formulas such as “spring is always sweet” or “autumn is always more aromatic.” They overlook both the variation within a season and the skill of the tea maker.
Can you identify the season from dry leaves?
Color, size and thickness offer clues about a sample, but they do not reliably establish its harvest date. Tea fruit, a golden ring in the cup or the speed at which leaves sink cannot replace production records. Pictures are particularly vulnerable to lighting and editing.

Compare samples fairly
Choose comparable products, use the same water, weigh the leaves and record your brewing method. Then compare aroma, texture, aftertaste and value at a similar drinking strength. Repeat the cup if an early impression is uncertain.

If a seller cannot explain the harvest claim, treat it as unresolved rather than guessing from appearance. A clear product description and an enjoyable sample are more helpful than a sweeping seasonal ranking.
