Blue and White Teacups Size Rim and Comfortable Handling

更新日:2026年10月8日

Two blue-and-white teacups can look almost identical in a catalogue and feel quite different in use. A shallow bowl, a tall cup and a small gongfu cup place the rim differently against your lips and hand. Before ordering a matching set, decide how much tea you want to drink at once and whether you prefer a handle.

Read capacity as a serving measurement

A cup’s brimful volume is not the amount most people comfortably drink from it. Leave room below the rim and ask for a usable serving estimate. For a gongfu session, smaller cups can work well when you divide several short infusions. For a single longer steep, a larger cup may be more convenient.

As an example, a brewing vessel producing about 120 ml of tea could serve two cups at roughly 50 ml each. The exact amount depends on the leaves and the fill level. Comparing working volumes helps you avoid a set whose cups are poorly matched to its pot or gaiwan.

Look at the rim from the side

Ask for a side photograph showing whether the rim flares outward, stays straight or turns slightly inward. Request the rim diameter and height. A wide cup may be pleasant for observing tea colour, while a narrow opening can suit someone who prefers a smaller sip. Personal comfort is the deciding factor.

Photographs cannot tell you whether a rim feels smooth. On arrival, inspect it under good light before use. A chipped or sharp edge deserves attention even when the decoration looks perfect elsewhere.

Check the foot and balance

A close view of the base helps you see the foot ring and any maker’s mark. Ask whether the cup sits flat on an ordinary table. Some unglazed foot rings feel rough, so use a suitable surface and avoid sliding the cup over a delicate tabletop.

If the cups are handmade, slight differences between pieces can be normal. Ask for a group photograph of the actual cups, including their rim heights. Variation should be described rather than hidden behind one sample image.

Treat tasting claims cautiously

Cup size and shape change the drinking experience, but a catalogue claim that one painted pattern “improves every tea” is not enough to make a purchase decision. Compare cups with the same tea, serving amount and conditions if you want to explore the difference yourself. The result should be described as your experience.

Ask about practical use

Confirm that the cups are intended for drinking, ask for cleaning instructions and check any restrictions on metallic decoration or delicate enamels. For a replacement order, send the original dimensions and photographs. “Blue and white” describes a broad appearance, not a standard cup size or a guarantee that a new piece will match your existing set.
