How to Store Keemun Black Tea and Keep Its Aroma

For everyday use, keep Keemun black tea in a well-sealed food-grade pouch, inside an opaque container, in a cool and dry cupboard. The main enemies are moisture, heat, light and strong odors. A beautiful tea tin is useful only if the tea inside is actually protected.
You do not need to move a sound, sealed pack into a new jar immediately. Often the original inner pouch provides a better barrier than a decorative lid.
Use an inner pouch as the first barrier
Choose clean, odor-free packaging intended for food. A reusable bag that held spices or coffee can leave a smell even after it looks clean. Check for holes, damaged seams and a closure that no longer grips.
After measuring a serving, close the pouch promptly. Gently reduce excess air without crushing the leaves. If the tea comes in individually sealed portions, leave the unused packets unopened.

A tin protects the pouch; it does not replace a seal
A tin or opaque jar helps block light and offers physical protection. Keep it away from the kettle, stove, sunny window and damp cupboard. Porcelain and ceramic containers vary in how well their lids close, so keep a suitable inner bag unless the container provides a reliable seal.

Clean the container before using it, and let it dry completely. Do not put loose tea into a container that is still damp from washing. Keep a small amount for daily use and the reserve pack closed if you buy a larger quantity.
Does Keemun need to go in the fridge?
A refrigerator is not the default choice for an everyday packet of black tea. It brings two practical problems: food odors and condensation when cold tea meets warm, humid air. For many homes, a good barrier pouch in a cool cupboard is simpler.
If the manufacturer’s instructions call for cold storage, use a moisture-resistant, tightly sealed pack and keep it separate from odorous food. Let the unopened pack reach room temperature before opening it. Repeatedly opening a cold bag encourages moisture to enter.

How long will the tea keep?
Follow the shelf life and dates on the actual package. There is no single expiry period that can be assigned to all Keemun: packaging, storage conditions and the product specification differ. Write the opening date on a daily-use pack so you know how long it has been in use.
A study comparing fresh and one-year-stored Keemun found changes in aroma compounds and sensory character in its samples. It is a useful reminder that a tea can change before a printed date, not proof that every tea becomes better or worse on an identical timetable.

What should you check before brewing?
Look for a sound seal, dry leaves and a clean smell. An infusion that seems flatter than before may reflect aroma loss; try a measured brew before changing the recipe substantially. Tea that has become damp, visibly moldy or contaminated should be discarded rather than dried again or blended into another tea.
Once brewed, keep the drink separate from the dry supply. Hot tea and iced tea are different serving choices; pouring leftover liquid back over stored leaves is not a storage method. For a repeatable cup, combine good storage with a consistent brewing recipe.
