When a Yixing teapot listing includes names such as zini, zhuni, duanni or Jiangponi, treat the label as the beginning of a conversation. Ask how the seller uses the term and what information supports it. A familiar name is not, by itself, a certificate of origin or a prediction of brewing performance.

This guide focuses on shopping questions. It does not offer a colour chart for authenticating clay or assign a best tea to each named material.

A finished teapot surface can be inspected visually, but a photograph cannot establish the complete clay composition.

Lighting, camera settings and your screen affect the appearance of colour. A close-up may help you see the surface, but it cannot establish the complete composition or production history of a fired vessel. Likewise, a supplier’s photograph of raw material does not demonstrate that the same material was used in the pot you are buying.

Listing term A useful follow-up question
A named clay What does this name mean in your product description?
Yixing origin Where was the vessel made, and what information documents that?
Handmade Which stages were carried out by hand, and by whom?
A maker’s stamp Who does the mark identify, and what supports the attribution?
Special brewing benefits Is this a documented comparison or a personal tasting opinion?

Even when the material description is clear, inspect the opening, handle, lid and pouring performance. A clay name does not answer those practical questions. Ask for photographs of the actual piece or clarify whether the images show a representative sample.

If you want to explore how a vessel affects your preferred tea, keep the leaf amount, water and timing as consistent as possible. Write down what you notice. Describe that as your tasting experience instead of treating it as a universal rule for every pot with the same label.

Museum records, including the Met’s Yixing examples, offer a reliable starting point for understanding historical stoneware. They do not verify contemporary supplier claims.

Sandao’s questions before buying a Yixing teapot expands the purchasing checklist. The Zini landscape teapot page gives an example of a product label to read alongside dimensions, photographs and seller information.
