How to Clean a Yixing Teapot After Everyday Use

For everyday Yixing teapot care, the useful habit is simple: remove the leaves, rinse the vessel and let every part dry before storage. Follow the maker’s instructions for your particular pot, especially if it includes paint, metal fittings or repairs.
TeaVivre’s maintenance notes advise against leaving tea liquid or spent leaves in the pot between uses and recommend drying it in an airy place. This supports a clean daily routine rather than trying to build up residue quickly.

1. Empty the pot after the session
Let the vessel become comfortable to handle, then remove the spent leaves. Work over a clear surface so the lid cannot fall into the sink. A soft tool can help with leaves near the bottom; avoid scraping the interior with a metal utensil.
2. Rinse gently and inspect
Use clean water and gentle handling. Warm a cold vessel gradually instead of exposing it to a sudden temperature change. Inspect the opening, lid rim and filter area for trapped leaves. If the pot has a narrow spout, do not force a rigid object through it.
For a plain unglazed pot, keep fragranced cleaning products away unless the maker specifically approves them. For persistent residue, an unusual smell or an unknown second-hand pot, ask the maker or a qualified ceramics specialist for a suitable cleaning method. An aggressive household recipe is not a universal solution.
3. Dry the lid and body separately
Place the body and lid on a stable surface with air circulating around them. Do not close a damp pot inside a presentation box. A dry-looking exterior does not necessarily mean the interior, spout and lid recess are ready for storage.
4. Store without pressure on fragile parts
Keep the pot away from the edge of a shelf. Avoid stacking other pieces on the lid or placing weight against the spout. If you use a padded box, check that the pot is fully dry first and that the padding does not force the lid against the body.

What about seasoning a new pot?
Initial preparation and routine cleaning are different jobs. Start by checking the supplied care instructions and removing packing dust as directed. Do not assume every pot needs boiling, long tea soaking or a particular “seasoning” recipe. Decorative details and construction can change what is appropriate.
Sandao’s guide to Yixing material and form explains what to inspect before use. The landscape teapot page provides a product example for examining the lid, body and decoration.
Regular care should keep the vessel usable and pleasant to handle. Judge success by cleanliness and condition, rather than by how quickly the surface becomes dark or glossy.
