Bai Ze Hanzhang Blue and White Wood-Fired Waisted Teacup

A Bai Ze mythical creature stands among curling clouds and rolling waves in this hand-painted blue and white porcelain teacup. Dense cobalt lines describe the mane, curved neck and limbs, while lighter washes give depth to the clouds. The narrow waist opens towards a gently flared rim, giving the painted creature a tall, flowing setting.

Part of the Fantasy Mountains and Seas collection, this design is named Bai Ze Hanzhang. The supplied materials present Bai Ze as an auspicious mythical creature. The subject is a decorative cultural motif, brought to life through the movement of the brushwork and the contrast between pale glaze and deep blue.

Made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China, the teacup is handmade, hand painted and wood-fired. The retail price is US$2,680. One teacup is included. Wooden stands, tea mats and other objects in the photographs are display accessories.

Hand-Painted Bai Ze, Clouds and Waves

The close-up view reveals fine lines within the mane and scales, dark blue accents around the face, and small changes of tone across the cloud and wave pattern. The decoration continues around the cup, with the reverse view available in the top gallery.

The firing atmosphere, position in the kiln and wood combustion can influence the blue and glaze. Hand forming, painting and firing also create small variations in shape, line and colour. The photographs guide the design; individual pieces can differ slightly.

Use and Care

Rinse before first use and leave room below the rim when filling. Handle hot porcelain carefully. Allow the cup to cool before washing, use a soft sponge, dry before storing and avoid abrasive cleaners, sudden temperature changes and knocks against the rim or foot. Dimensions are approximate, and lighting and screen settings affect the appearance of the glaze.
