A blue and white dragon teacup for personal tea sessions

This handmade Jingdezhen porcelain teacup combines a hand-painted dragon with a subtle seawater pattern. Deep blue brushwork stands out against the pale glazed body, while the broad, flared rim opens above a neat foot ring framed by a geometric key-fret border.

Made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, China, the cup is described in the supplied materials as hand-painted and traditionally wood-fired. It holds approximately 100 mL. This listing is for one teacup; trays, pitchers and other vessels in the photographs and video are staging accessories.

Dragon brushwork and subtle incised seawater

The dragon wraps around the outside of the cup, with carefully painted scales, flowing whiskers and expressive claws. A second dragon forms a medallion inside the cup. Blue wave decoration follows the inner rim, bringing the water theme into the view seen while drinking.

The design combines stronger blue lines with a much quieter background. The supplied detail photograph describes the seawater pattern as shallow carving, with blue painting added to the surface. Light catches the subtle incised lines beneath the glaze, giving the waves another layer of texture.

The meaning of the dragon motif

In Chinese decorative traditions, the dragon is associated with strength, auspicious wishes and success. Here, its flowing body moves across the quiet seawater background. The pattern is presented as a traditional decorative motif; this contemporary cup is not described as an antique or an imperial artefact.

Hand forming, painting and glazing

The workshop materials illustrate clay preparation, wheel forming, drying, trimming, painting, glazing and firing. These stages require different skills: shaping the body, refining the foot and rim, controlling the blue brushwork and preparing the glaze for firing.

The photographs below are process illustrations from the supplied workshop materials. No individual artist was named for this particular cup, so the people shown are not attributed as its maker.

Traditional wood firing in Jingdezhen

The supplied kiln information describes pine wood as the firing fuel and shows ceramic vessels loaded into protective saggars. The brick-lined chamber, firewood preparation and firing team give a closer view of the work behind a wood-fired finish.

Glaze tone and the appearance of blue decoration can vary with firing conditions. Small differences in painted lines, dimensions and surface character are expected between handmade pieces; each cup may look slightly different from the photographed example.

At the tea table

The pale interior offers a clear view of the tea colour, with the dragon medallion visible beneath the infusion. The open rim and low bowl form make this a personal tasting cup for tea poured from a gaiwan, teapot or serving pitcher.
